Portraying this year's design from the Australian Lunar Silver Coin Series II, this coin celebrates the dragon, the fifth of the twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar. The dragon on the coin is pad printed in blue, one of the nine colors featured on the famous Nine Dragon Wall in China.

Issued at ANDA Sydney in 2012, the coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in specimen quality. The reverse of the coin depicts a blue dragon with a representation of a pearl. The color blue is deeply significant, representing the healing element of water, prosperity, eternity and peace. The Chinese character for'dragon' and the inscription YEAR OF THE DRAGON also appear in the design with The Perth Mint's traditional'P' mintmark.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the 2012 year-date.
